Dear Parents,
We are finished with MILESTONES! The students did a great job, and I don't think it was as bad as they thought it would be. In fact, many of them said it was easier than the CRCT....I'm not sure about that though!
We have a busy few weeks coming up in 5th grade. Starting Monday we will be teaching the Human Growth and Development Class to the boys and the girls ( separately). We will have the class on May 4th, May 7th, and May 12th. There was a permission slip that went home yesterday. Please return ASAP. You can choose whether or not you want your child to participate. Those that don't participate will work on another Health lesson with Ms. Steinhart or Ms. Rowley while I instruct the girls. The boys will be instructed by Mr. Reynolds and Mr. Stevenson.
We will also be going on a field trip to the middle schools on Friday, May8th. That permission slip went home last week. Please return both permission slips by Friday at the latest.
Students will also be taking the STAR reading and math test next week. I know - more testing! This will be on the ipad or computer, and they have already taken it twice this year. This will show some immediate feedback on how they are doing and how they have progressed this year. Some students will also be taking acceleration/advanced testing. I am attaching the information about that as well.

Dear Parents,
I hope everyone had a great Spring Break; I know I did! I just wanted to update you on the testing schedule for Milestones which will begin this week. It is quite different from CRCT testing which was done pretty much five days in a row. This is spread out over three weeks.
This week we will begin on Thursday, April 16th with ELA/ Reading. That will be our only testing date this week, so the rest of the week will be a regular schedule. On our testing dates, we will have specials at the end of the day instead of the beginning so that we can begin at 8:00 a.m. Our lunch on testing dates will be the same. However, on "B" days, which are the days that 3rd grade is testing and not us, we will also have a different schedule which means we will have lunch on B days at 11:25, and specials at 8: 40. "A "days for us are testing days, and we will have lunch at 12:15 ( regular time) and specials at 1:25. I wanted you to be aware of the change in times, in case you need to check your child out for appointments etc.
The testing schedule for 5th grade is:
Thursday, April 16th - ELA/Reading
Monday, April 22nd - Writing
Wednesday, April 24th - Math
Monday April 27th - Science
Wednesday April 29th - Social Studies

Dear Parents,
Tomorrow is Dr. Seuss Day, and the kids may wear pajamas! Please make sure they wear shoes though as many have P.E. Also, this Friday we will be celebrating "Pi Day." This is always a fun event in the 5th grade. Pi Day is actually on Saturday 3.14 , but we will have to celebrate a day early. If you would like to send in something round such as a pie, or small cake, or pizza etc. we will be measuring them and finding the cirucumference and area of the "pies," using pi!
Upcoming events: We DO have school on Friday, March 13th. This will be a snow make up day. This is also the last day of the quarter, so the grading period ends this day.
March 23rd - Spring Picture Day - non -uniform for pictures this time!

The new edmodo codes are: 5th grade math 4wih2e
6th grade math: nxeqtw
If your child forgets their username or password, they have to make a new account. Please use your lunch number and birthdate like we do for AR, so it is easy to remember! I will be giving homework about once a week on edmodo, and I will also post some videos that they can use for review in Math and Language Arts.

Dear Parents,
We are winding down our first semester. It is amazing how fast it has gone! Just a few reminders for the next couple of weeks.
1. Please write your child's name in their coats and jackets. With the colder weather they are leaving them in the gym, or on the playground or other various places. It will be easier to get them back if they have their names in them.
2. We will be conducting a class Spelling Bee over the next couple of weeks during ELA. The top five spellers will participate in the Spelling Bee in January.
3. We took our Unit 3 Math test last Friday, and will have one more quiz on our new unit before the end of the semester. The sixth grade math group will have their unit test this Friday, December 12th. Please be sure to check Parent Connect to keep updated on your child's grades.
4. Signed papers will be coming home tomorrow- December 8th.
5. We will have a Reading Test on December 16th. We are currently reading informational text, and working on citing text evidence in our reading, as well as determining the main/central ideas, and details in a text. We are also comparing and contrasting characters and ideas.
6. Our next math unit is on Fractions ( 5th) and ( positive/ negative numbers and coordinate grids 6th) . We will be working on these units through January.
7. OUr Winter Holiday Party will be on December 19th - more details to come~!

Dear Parents,
Thanks for all of you help and contributions with our Fall Centers. I think all of the kids had a great day! Now, it is time to start thinking about Thanksgiving! Things will be a bit different this year, and all grades will be able to enjoy the Thanksgiving Feast in the cafeteria. Grade 5 will have their day on November 21st, and our lunch is extended that day from 12:10-12:55, so you will have plenty of time to enjoy lunch with your child. I hope you will all be able to attend since it is their last year in Elementary School! A yellow form is coming home to reserve your spot, so please be on the lookout for it.

Parents, Our Rock Eagle trip is just around the corner. We will be sending home a letter along with the packing list on Monday. I'm attaching a copy of the letter here as well. Reminders:
September 9, 2014
Parents, I hope to see you all at Curriculum Night tonight. If you are not able to make it, I will be sending a copy of the agenda for tonight home, so that you can see most of what we covered. If you have not signed up for REMIND, please text @ f9366 to 404 62-6115 for homeroom reminders ( these will come as a text message). Also text @wardmath to the same number for math updates. For those of you wondering how you can help your children at home with math, I have a great website for you. www.learnzillion.com has great videos ( short lessons) on each of the standards we teach in math. I show some of them in class on occasion, but they would be great as review or to explain a standard that your child is not understanding, or missed when absent. Please check it out! k August 28, 2014,
Parents, 5th graders will be tested for VISION on Wednesday, September3rd. Please make every effort to have your child at school that day. If your child wears glasses, be sure they have them at school that day as well. My math classes are using a website called Mangahigh. Many have asked if they can play at home. The answer is YES! They will have to logon as www.mangahigh.com/myschool/spaldingdrive ( Ward's homeroom). Reynolds homeroom login is www.mangahighcom/myschool/sdce ( Mr. Reynolds' math class has not received their usernames and passwords yet, but will this week). August 14, 2014
Parents,
The Rock Eagle permission slips went home last week as well as the Media Center permission slips. The students need their Media Center permission slips in order to check out books. We would like the Rock Eagle permission slips back by Friday so we can make arrangements for the buses and accommodations. Even if you need to pay later, please return the permission slip asap. If you have not signed up for Remind, please do so. This is a way for me to text you important reminders. You can't respond to the texts, but it is a quick way for me to keep you informed. If you are in my homeroom, please text @f9366 to 404 620-6115. If I am also your child's math teacher text @wardmath to the same number. |

I also have a Procedure Manual that I have updated. I am attaching it here for you to read over. The students should all take time to read it over. We will go over it in class, but this will be a good reminder for them as well. There are some things that only apply to the students, but you will get an idea of how our class works!
